Owls drop second game in a row, lose to Floral Park 6-0

13 Sep 2023 by Coach Berlin

The Lynbrook Owls were hoping to build on a better second half of play in their season opener against Valley Stream South last week and travel to Floral Park Memorial HS and record their first points in Conference A West. The team worked on getting out to a better start and knew that dropping the first two games of the young season would put them up against the wall.

For the second time in as many games the Owls surrendered an opening goal within the first 5 minutes when a through ball found an unmarked Floral Park player on the back side of the defense who beat Senior goal keeper Michael Diaz (5 saves) for the first of 3 first half tallies. The Owls did seem to settle in played a better game defensively not surrendering another goal until the 33rd minute when a mistimed tackle resulted in a penalty kick for the second game in a row. The Owls were able to generate opportunities numerous times with Senior Patrick O’Doherty, and Sophomores Nick Mignella and Garrett Reid almost getting the Owls back into the game. The game now standing at 2-0, The host Knights capped the half in the 36th minute of the first half with a finish off a poorly defended long throw-in that seemed to bounce 3-4 times before Floral Park volleyed it home to extend their lead, 3-0.

The second half went scoreless for the first 21 minutes and then it seemed like the Owls ran out of steam. Mishandled passes. poorly executed movement and a lack of winning the 50/50 balls allowed the Floral Park side to manage the game. The 4th goal by the Knights was converted off of a corner kick in the 61st minute and the 5th was what looked to be an offsides player on a through ball that led to a 1 on 1 against Diaz. Floral Park capped off the scoring in the 76th minute when one of the Knights took a passed ball around the outside of the Lynbrook defense, closed in on the goal and with Diaz trying to come out and close down the angle, roofed the ball into the back corner of the net. Final score, 6-0.

With the hopes and expectations that this result is a one-off for the Owls and they will finally break through with their first win and points of this young season, Lynbrook will travel to neighboring Valley Stream North on 9/14 to take on a Spartans team who just lost 5-0 to Lawrence HS.
