Varsity Boys Squad remain unbeaten in last 5 matches with 1-1 draw in non league friendly with Sewanhaka

1 Oct 2023 by Coach Berlin

The Varsity Boys Soccer Team hosted Sewanhaka HS in a non league friendly in what was suppose to be the final of 4 back-to-back games on what was to be Soccer Day. Mother Nature had other plans and the day of celebration was cancelled due to the unprecedented rainfall on Friday which flooded out the South Middle School fields. The teams and the Lynbrook Soccer Booster Club had no choice but to pivot to an alternate plan and turn the entire upcoming week into Soccer Week.
Each of the next home games for both the JV and Varsity teams for the Boys and Girls programs would be designated as charity events benefiting the Ryan Patrick O’Shea Foundation and Senior Scholarships. The school was able to reschedule the JV games for the morning and the Boys Varsity game was moved to 6PM and was played at Greis Park.

The Owls went into the match with the understanding that as a non league friendly, many for the regular starters would give way to their teammates who had limited time and give them an opportunity to showcase their abilities. The night did not disappoint as the Owls continued their strong play and be great mentality as they were able to play to a 1-1 draw with the visiting Sewanhaka Side.

Sewanhaka broke the 0-0 tie in the 4th minute of the game when Senior Jude David Amideke collected a through ball from Aldo Garayar. Amideke took one dribble to goal and beat the Owl’s goal keeper Michael Diaz (4 saves) on the low side to give Sewanhaka the 1-goal advantage early. Sewanhaka continued to press forward throughout the first half of paly but he Owls stood tall and played very good defensive soccer as they stopped any attacking opportunities and even created things forward. The Lynbrook side however was held without a shot in the first half of play and sat a goal behnd at the half way break. The second half saw the home team continue to rotate personnel and begin to find opportunities forward. After a couple of near finishes, Senior Patrick O’Doherty finally leveled the game at 1 for the Owls as he collected a ball roughly 50 yards from goal, beat a number of opposing players including the Sewanhaka’s goal keeper Piero Parravinici (1 save) and leveled the game. O’Doherty nearly did it again with a minute left but the shot found the outside of the side netting.

The Owls have now played to a draw in their last 4 games and have not lost in their last 5. They hope to take the play and register some much needed wins this week as they travel to Valley Stream South on Monday who they lost to by a score of 4-2 in their initial meeting of the season.

It is no surprise that the Lynbrook Team is a very different squad then they were back on September 12th and hope to earn the 3 points and the win in the standings to increase their chances of a postseason berth. Gametime, 4:30PM at VS South High School.
