On a rainy Saturday at Marion Street Elementary School, the Varsity Owls took flight and defeated the Spartans of Valley Stream North 3-1 in a game the Lynbrook side needed to win in order to keep their chances of a post season berth alive.

After almost an hours delay and some hard work by the Lynbrook Grounds personnel, the field drained enough from the deluge of rain that had fallen to allow the two teams to begin warm-ups as they prepared to meet for the second time in the season. The first meeting saw the Owls come out on top by a score of 2-nil and were now hoping for a similar result as they continue to work towards the post season tournament.

Patrick O’Doherty got the Owls on the board in the first half of play when he chipped a well placed ball over the Spartans goal keeper off of a touch pass from Gio Bello. Sam Moscheni extended the lead to two when he headed home a crossed ball from Lucas Addona. Valley Stream was able to convert and score early in the second half to cut the lead to 1, but the Lynbrook defense did what it has done game in and game out and clamped down and denied any more opportunities for the Valley Stream North side. Junior Marco Pantano scored Lynbrook’s final goal with a minute left when he converted a direct kick into the left netting of the goal past the Spartans goal keeper.

Next up for the Owls is a match with the Hewlett Bulldogs on Wednesday evening as the two squads meet for the second time in the season after playing to a scoreless draw the first time around. With a win over Hewlett and at least one tie in the final two matches, the Owls should punch a ticket to the post season tournament in Class A.
