Owls continue to trade wins and losses; drop 0-2 decision to Mineola

29 Sep by Coach Berlin

The Lynbrook Owls travelled to Hampton Stadium in Mineola on 9/25 for a 7PM match against the Mustangs on Senior Night for the Mineola squad. The Owls were hoping to get a little revenge after the early season match ended in a 0-2 loss in a game that saw the Lynbrook team surrender an early goal and a penalty shot in the first half of play. This time, Lynbrook was hoping to put together 2 complete halves of soccer and try and get some much needed points for the Owls.

The game opened with the home town Mustangs with some early pressure as the visiting Owls were hoping to weather the pressure and not surrender an early goal as they have done multiple times this season. Unfortunately, the 2 mistakes by the Owls in the opening 15 minutes put them in a 0-2 hole. The first was in the 6th minute when an errant goal kick by keeper Jake Prince (7 saves) was collected by Mineola in the center of the field and taken back towards the Owl’s keeper and they scored. Less than 10 minutes later, the Lynbrook defense made a poor decision on clearing the ball and headed it down into the middle of the field. Mineola, once again, was able to get to the ball, get behind the defense and score the second of the game. Lynbrook weathered the Mustangs pressure the remainder of the first half with hopes to regroup at halftime.

The second half saw a definite change in the Owls game as they did a better job of pressuring together and keeping Mineola from gaining any real momentum. The increased pressure and much better effort by the Owls led to a number of great chances to score but they were never able find the back of the net.

The 0-2 loss drops the Owls to 3-5 in league and makes their playoff aspirations a little more bleak, but not gone. They now have to win 3 of their final 4 league games to qualify for the post season for the 6th straight season. It is a tall task but the team knows that they can complete and win if the effort and attitude is right.

Come out and support the boys as they make the push for the post season.
